With 40 seconds left, the hugging began. The Buena Park players embraced, celebrating their 10-0 Freeway League victory over Sunny Hills at Buena Park High School.

With 24 seconds left, the Coyote fans rose to join in, stomping and clapping. With two seconds to go, Coach Marty Luczaj ran--no skipped--onto the field with both arms raised, shouting at the top of his lungs.

Time had run out on 12 years of frustration and everyone on the Buena Park side was going to savor this one.

For the first time since 1979, Buena Park had beaten Sunny Hills, an 11-game losing streak, which included a 33-0 thumping last season.

“You bet this was big, you bet,” Luczaj said. “This was a great win for Buena Park. I mean great .”

Yes, the monkey was off their backs.

The Coyotes have not won a league championship since 1965. In fact, at one point during the 1980s, they lost 28 consecutive league games.

But Buena Park (6-1, 2-0 in league) became instant front-runners by winning. The Lancers, after all, had won four of the past five league titles and were Southern Section Division VI champions last season.

Now, it’s the Coyotes’ turn to howl.

“We’ve dreamed about beating Sunny Hills,” running back Angel Barrios said. “Last year, we thought we could do it and they killed us. This year, we knew it was time to get the job done.”

And everyone had a hand in it.

The defense, which bent and was sometimes twisted, held when it had to, including a goal-line stand late in the third quarter.

The offense was asked to do little, but did enough. The Coyotes were content to keep on the ground, finishing with 161 yards rushing.

Sunny Hills (3-4, 1-1) gained 196 yards rushing, 173 by Marlon Womack. But Womack and the Lancers could not gain an inch on a fourth-down play from the Buena Park one-yard line.

In fact, Womack was stuffed in the backfield by Lynde Fotu and Jason Gallego to preserve a 7-0 Buena Park lead.

“There was no way they were getting into the end zone,” said Fotu, who recovered two fumbles and had one sack. “We were tougher.”

The Coyotes then drove to the Sunny Hills seven and Frank Aguilar kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead.

Barrios gained 83 yards and Hector Rubio had 40, including a 32-yard run that set up the Coyotes’ touchdown. Geno Robles scored on a quarterback sneak from one yard out.

“This was our time, we knew it,” Barrios said.
