Canyons Rocks and Rolls to 25-9 Victory : Junior college baseball: Cougars collect 19 hits against Moorpark and clinch a share of the conference championship.

Perhaps Dick Clark ought to tape these hit parades.

College of the Canyons collected 19 hits in a 25-9 victory over Moorpark on Tuesday at Valencia to clinch a tie for the Western State Conference championship, the school’s fifth title in seven seasons.

The Cougars (24-7, 21-3 in conference play) lead second-place Valley (19-13, 18-8) by four games. Canyons has six games remaining, Valley four.

“What makes this sweet is that we were not the preseason favorites to win it,” Canyons Coach Len Mohney said.

The Cougars have been getting the task accomplished all season with timely hitting from its powerful lineup, and good-to-excellent pitching.

Against Moorpark (17-19, 12-14), the Cougars unleashed a potent attack that produced eight doubles and two home runs. The teams combined for 31 hits to stay in character in Canyons’ “Temple of Boom,” which has been a hitters’ paradise in the WSC this season.

“We approached this game like a playoff game,” Mohney said. “Their No. 1 pitcher throwing against us. There was a little bit of a killer instinct today.”

The Cougars jumped to a 7-0 lead after one inning when Moorpark right-hander Josh Zamarripa walked home three runs, gave up a two-run single to Chad Miyata and a two-run double to Chris Pfatenhauer, all with two out. Zamarripa (5-2) didn’t survive the inning.

The Raiders, who split their two previous games with Canyons this season, got to left-hander Jason Chandler (7-1) for two runs in the second inning but the Cougars picked up five more in the bottom of the inning, building their lead to 12-2.

The big blast of the rally was a two-run home run over the right-field fence by third baseman Ted Kiester. Kiester, a left-handed batter from Hart High, was three for five with seven runs batted in.

Chandler, a sophomore from Burbank High, gave up 11 hits in seven innings and walked one with no strikeouts.

Canyons added five runs in the fifth for a 17-3 cushion, three of them coming on a shot over the right-center-field fence by first baseman Andy Shaw. It was the 10th homer of the season for Shaw, who leads the conference.

Moorpark first baseman Aaron Fischer smashed his third home run in the sixth inning, a two-run drive that cut the Canyons lead to 17-5.

But the Cougars pulled away by scoring three runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.

Moorpark, which won four of its previous five games, collected 13 hits against four pitchers, including two doubles by shortstop Brian Vasey and one by catcher Steve Bernstein.

Right fielder John Davis was four for six and scored four runs for Canyons, and Shaw was two for three. Center fielder Daryl Hernandez was three for four for Moorpark.
