Ganesha baseball Coach Warner Staffard was struck by a stray shot as he was coaching on the school campus last Thursday, but he turned down hospital treatment. Staffard, 26, was not hurt seriously but was advised by paramedics to get tetanus shots. Pomona Police Lt. Charles Watts said witnesses reported hearing two or three shots fired on a neighboring street. The bullet hit a campus fence, then traveled 200 yards before hitting Staffard. . . . Lana Moran of Cajon notched her 1,000th career strikeout last week. Moran, a four-year starter on the softball team, has 1,002 strikeouts and 14 no-hitters in 77 games. . . .. In baseball, Nick Nixon of Desert Christian stole six bases in his team’s 8-3 victory over Twin Pines last week. He was two for two with a double in that game. . . . Jason Farmer threw a no-hitter and struck out 10 as Indio beat Palo Verde, 12-0, on Tuesday. . . . Robert Womack of Fontana was nine for 18 in five games last week and is hitting .545 this season. . . . Colton’s Reggie Jackson had a triple jump of 43 feet 2 inches in a dual meet with San Bernardino last Thursday. Jackson also won the high jump with a mark of 5-8. . . . Also at Colton, Dick Shelko, 56, has been hired as the new football coach. He previously coached at El Rancho in Pico Rivera from 1988 through ‘93, along with numerous other assistant coaching jobs.
