Ranked No. 1 in the county throughout the season, Bahena won an individual title at the Southern Section Division III championships, finished second at the Masters and seventh at state.

Calvary Chapel, Sr.

A two-time Nevada state champion, Azevedo took third at state, where his only defeat came at the hands of state champion Steven Abas. First at Masters and section Division I finals.

BURT PIERSON

Calvary Chapel, Sr.

Pierson, suffering a sore back all season long, was able to turn what could have been a disastrous season into a winning one with a section Division I title and sixth-place finish at state.

La Habra, Sr.

Lowe, a Freeway League champion, finished fifth at the Southern Section Division III finals and seventh at Masters. He won his first match at the state finals but lost his second.

The state and Masters champion showed remarkable courage and discipline in his final match in Stockton, defeating defending champion Adam Coffing of El Grove, 6-5.

Hernandez, a transfer from El Toro, seemingly came out of nowhere to finish first at the Southern Section Division I finals and fifth at Masters. Fell one match short of placing at state.

Wozniak advanced to the third round in the state consolation matches before losing to Jose Luppian of Dos Palos. Finished second at Masters, third at Southern Section Division I finals.

Wilcox (52-1) won at the Southern Section Division I finals, Masters and the state finals, where he helped the Eagles to their third title by defeating Ati Connor of Goleta Dos Pueblos.

AUSTEN CATHEY

Huntington Beach, Jr.

Cathey was the county’s only 160-pounder to qualify for the state, where he was eliminated in the second round of consolations. Finished fifth at Masters and third at Division II finals.

Calvary Chapel, Jr.

Another pleasant surprise for Calvary Chapel, Meineke beat Phillip Miller of Phelan Serrano in the consolation bracket at the state finals to reach the medal round, where he finished seventh.

REUBEN DROUGHNS

Anaheim, Sr.

Oregon State-bound Droughns was a Southern Section Division I champion and just missed placing at state after losing to Jack DelMonte of Pittsburg, 6-4. Finished third at Masters.

ANDREW MURPHY

215 pounds

Brea Olinda, Sr.

Murphy advanced to the state quarterfinals, where he lost to Mike Maben of Loomis Del Oro. He finished second at the Masters and first at the Southern Section Division I finals.

JASON DEERE

275 pounds

Newport Harbor, Jr.

The lone 275-pounder from the county to participate in the state finals, Deere had some tough matches on his way to a seventh-place finish. Took second at Masters and Division II finals.
