Westlake’s Rundle Bound for UCSB

Westlake High setter Brooke Rundle has made a commitment to UC Santa Barbara.

The 5-foot-6 Rundle, who will be a senior at Westlake, chose the Gauchos over Washington.

Rundle was a Times’ all-region selection last year and helped the Warriors reach the Southern Section Division II-A final.

Net gain: Top-seeded Gene Malin of Woodland Hills defeated Harvey Mardyks of Camarillo, 6-2, 6-1, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the United States Tennis Assn. National 45 Men’s Hardcourt Championships at Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.

Rick Rozen of Woodland Hills and Tom Wire of Westlake Village also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Not up to par: Russell Surber of Flintridge Prep had a 77 in the third round and is 11 strokes behind in the Rolex Tournament of Champions at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head South, S.C.

David Gossett of Germantown, Tenn., leads at 210 after 54 holes.

Piercing: Dan Wasserman of Oak Park High, Tri-Valley League player of the year, said he will likely play baseball at Pierce College next year.

Wasserman batted .528 with 30 runs batted in last season.

Webb resigns: Rob Webb has resigned after two seasons as boys’ basketball coach at Alemany High. Webb has been replaced by Jin Park, a former Alemany freshman coach.

What a Blast: The Valley United Blast under-19 boys club soccer team has advanced to the U.S. Youth Soccer championships July 29-Aug. 2 in Phoenix.

The Blast won the Far West regional tournament last weekend in Salt Lake City.

The team’s 18-man roster includes seven players who received all-region recognition from The Times during their high school careers, including Derrick Dyslin, the 1996 player of the year.

Michael Preis, Danny Ortega and Robbie Shapiro played for Cal State Northridge last season.
