* FAST FACTS: California has won both previous games, 6-0, in 1995, and, 27-12, last year. . . . Texas has yet to score a touchdown against the California defense. . . . The game, in its 45th year, was previously played between North and South teams from California.

* ABOUT CALIFORNIA: Quarterback Joe Borchard of Camarillo (Stanford), linebacker Derrell Daniels of Sylmar (Washington), cornerback Tony Walker of Antelope Valley (Utah State) and offensive tackle Mike Wambolt of Hart (Colorado) represent the Valley/Ventura region. Other top players include wide receiver Joey Getherall of La Puente Bishop Amat (Notre Dame), who averaged 25.2 yards each time he touched the ball; receiver Ken-Yon Rambo of Long Beach Poly (Ohio State), an All-American who caught 77 passes for 18 touchdowns; and tight end Antoine Harris of Loyola (USC), The Times’ Glenn Davis Award winner as the top player in Southern California.

* ABOUT TEXAS: Top players include lineman Scott Puckett (Miami); option quarterback J.P. Jansen (Baylor); and linebacker Christian Rodrigues (Texas A&M;), who made 147 tackles as the leader of a team that was ranked No. 1 nationally at one point last season.
