Stanford Rolls Into Rematch

Stanford came into the College World Series as one of the top offensive teams in the tournament, and South Carolina got another dose of the Cardinal’s powerful lineup Tuesday.

Danny Putnam homered and drove in five runs to lead a 17-hit attack as Stanford defeated the Gamecocks for the second time, 13-6, in an elimination game at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Cardinal (48-16) reached a bracket final for the fifth consecutive year and will face Cal State Fullerton today. Stanford must defeat the Titans twice to advance to the best-of-three championship series.

Putnam went four for five and scored twice. He singled in a run in the first inning, doubled in another in a three-run third inning and hit his 15th homer, a two-run shot to right-center in the seventh, to give Stanford a 9-0 lead.

Ryan McCally pitched for the first time since May 30 when he pitched a complete game to defeat Illinois Chicago in the regionals. The senior right-hander was strong again Tuesday as he held the Gamecocks to a run and six hits in seven innings.

South Carolina (45-22) got home runs from Brian Buscher, Steven Tolleson and Bryan Triplett.

Texas 5, Miami 1 -- Freshman Sam LeCure set up a rematch with Rice in tonight’s bracket final as he limited the Hurricanes to one run in 6 2/3 innings before 23,162.

Texas (50-19), the defending NCAA champion, scored three times in the third inning on Michael Hollimon’s solo home run and Dustin Majewski’s two-run double. The Longhorns added two runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

Miami finished with a 45-17-1 record.
